The Jean-Léon Allie Library and Archives’ Rare Books and Special Collections reflect the research interests and teaching disciplines offered at Saint Paul University. Since the library’s foundation in 1937 as the University of Ottawa’s seminary library, our collections have grown to include pre-1937 books and related sources dating back to the 15th century—largely in the areas of theology, canon law, philosophy, medieval studies, religious history, literature, and early Canadiana.
The first Head Librarian, the late Father Jean-Léon Allie, OMI, was integral to the development of our Rare Books and Special Collections. Over the course of sixty years, Father Allie acquired rare and old books for the collection. He scoured the theological libraries and collections in North America and Europe, often returning with numerous volumes, including recuperated rare books from the aftermath of World War II. Through the continuation of Allie’s efforts, the collection has grown to over 30,000 volumes.
More information on our specific collection strengths will be available soon.
